In 2011, our Honorary Jam Committee was led by local music luminaries and co-chairs Joan Baez, Pete Escovedo, Huey Lewis, Bobby McFerrin, Janice Mirikitani, Cindy & Carlos Santana, SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK™, Paula West and Cecil Williams as well as local philanthropist Richard C. Blum. The Mistress of Ceremonies was San Francisco Giants announcer and radio personality, Renel Brooks-Moon. The GLIDE Annual Holiday Jam benefited Mo’s Kitchen, the heart and soul behind GLIDE’s Daily Meals Program which serves up more than a million free meals each year to San Francisco’s poor and hungry residents.
“As always, we are overwhelmed with gratitude to the Bay Area entertainment community for supporting our efforts to give comfort and meet the basic needs of our poorest neighbors,” said Reverend Cecil Williams, Founder and Minister of Liberation for GLIDE. “The community joined us at the Warfield for an upbeat and lively evening of music, laughter, friendship and giving.”
The evening contained a heartfelt tribute to Nick Ashford of Ashford and Simpson, the powerhouse Motown songwriting/production team and performing duo. Mr. Ashford, who passed away in August of 2011, was an enthusiastic supporter of GLIDE’s programs, and made a surprise appearance with Valerie Simpson at GLIDE’s 2009 Holiday Festival.
“We miss Nick greatly, and will always appreciate his commitment to our community,” said Janice Mirikitani, Founding President of the GLIDE Foundation. “We remember not only his legacy as a talented songwriter, but his legacy as a loving and generous human being.”
Valerie Simpson in her interview with SF Chronicle shared, "Glide is very important to Nick and myself. We have appeared at their annual shows before. I love what they represent. I feel safe in that environment because of the Rev. Cecil Williams and his wife, Janice. It's like family. More importantly, it's something Nick would appreciate. That's how Nick started - he was homeless." To read the full San Francisco Chronicle interview with Ms. Simpson, click here.
